The Newport News Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and the Southeast Community Day Planning Committee is pleased to invite you to participate in our 19th Annual Southeast Community Day Parade. This event will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. beginning at Booker T. Washington Middle School, 3700 Chestnut Avenue and ending at Dunbar-Erwin Elementary School, 726 16th Street. The festival will begin immediately after the parade. 

The festival sites will be located at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza on 25th Street and the Moton Community House, 2101 Jefferson Avenue, Newport News, Virginia.  The festival sites will include a Block Party with a Main Stage, Gospel Stage and Children’s Amusements. The Moton Community House will serve as the Parade Reviewing Stand and Zion Baptist Church Grounds – Supportive Services of first aid and public safety.  Our theme is “Building A Stronger Community.” 

The Southeast Community Day Parade and Festival will be held from 25th and Jefferson Avenue to 21st and Jefferson Avenue.  There will be a Commemorative March and Mardi Gras Parade beginning at 12:30 p.m. from the Moton Community House proceeding to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza on 25th and Jefferson Avenue.  Dr. Alveda C. King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will serve as this year's Parade Grand Marshal and Presidential Reception Keynote Speaker.

The March will begin at 12:30 p.m. (or immediately following the last unit of the Southeast Community Day Parade) on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from the Moton Community House, 2101 Jefferson Avenue proceeding northbound to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way at the Jefferson Avenue intersection.  The event will conclude at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza. The public is invited to attend and enjoy the festivities of children’s amusements, entertainment and a large vendor area for your shopping pleasure.  
This is our opportunity to remind the community of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message of non-violence, peace, justice and equality.  One voice, on one accord, “Building A Stronger Community.”
